Dear Alumni:

Talofa!

I am Fa'ifa'imea Fa'alafua Auva'a, a graduate of Church College - 1970. I havejust recently been elected the new President of the CCWS Atumni USA Association in Utah, with Wayne Wong and Seti Matua as Vice-Presidents and Julie Iosefa Tuimauga, Treasurer and Fale Tago Ripley, Secretary. I went back and taught school at Pesega for three years (1983 -1985), under the administration of the late, Tauialo Tauavamea Lanu Palepoi - CES Administrator, Leilua Logo Apelu - Curriculum Director, and Fata Vaitu'u Kaio - Principal. They were the best educational times of my teaching career.

The purpose of my writing is to solicit help from you, my fellow alumni of Church Schools of Samoa. We have a strong alumni association already set up and registered as a non-profit organization in the USA - State of Utah. Thank you to those who pioneered this great organization up to now! There is no reason why SCOPA, Avele, SMOP, Marist, Liahona and others have a strong alumni and we,
CCWS, do not.

For the alumni to continue strong, we need your help. If you attended any Church schools in Samoa, whether it be Vaiola, Sauniatu, or Pesega, please help us. We have set an annual fee of $20. You can write a check or send money, which ever is convenient for you. Please make it out to CCWS Alumni and use the address on this letterhead. We have yet to setup a post office box for the alumni, but for the time being, please use the address at the bottom of this message. We have a lot of activities throughout the year such as socials, firesides, barbeques, scholarships and reunions, where all alumni and their families are welcomed. Please check our website (http://www.ccws4.lumni.com) often for those activities, and, if you are in town, by all means, come on over. Every year we register the organization so that it can be legally a non-profitorganization in the State of Utah. You can always donate more, but if you can pay your annual fee of $20 first, that will be greatly appreciated.

The comradery with your alma mater is always something you should be proud of. Having said that, Leilua Logo Apelu, Chairman, and others, have setup a school alumni reunion to be held here in Utah, October 20ll I am excited about it!! !. Please plan your vacation now so that you can come and spend time with your alma mater and fellow classmates, teachers, and others who attended the Church schools in Samoa. We will have registration at the start of the rennion, and a prize will be awarded for the class which has the most alumni registered and attending the reunion. It brings to my mind a famous saying by one of our beloved prophets, Spencer W. Kimball - "DO IT". Let us make it happen, GOLD & BLUE, lets DO IT!!!!

Fa'agalo ni aleu ua tuana'i ae sagai mai e fai ia manuia le asosi a tama ma teine tuai aaoga a le ekalesia i Samoa, aua o lea ua tatou aeae manuia ai nei.

Soifua,
Fa'ifa'imea Fa'alafua Auva'a
President

ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR PAST PRESIDENCY

1. Legally registered and paid two years of expired permit to raise funds as a charitable organization.

2. Set up the organization as a legal entity with a 501-C3 status having valid Articles of Incorporation and By-laws to function by.

3. Set up a functioning Board of Directors and committee chairs.

4. Set up a website with the help of Bro. Sherwood, a Board member, to connect with our CCWS alumni everywhere in the states and abroad.

5. Joined the Samoan Cultural Celebration Board to promote service with our youth and our community.

6. Started having firesides to help with the spiritual needs of our alumni and our community.

7. Designed our own CCWS t-shirts, polo shirts, hats, license plates, etc.

8. Produced a DVD titled: “Education is the Key” - with the help of Pres. Carl Harris, highlighting several of our own CCWS alumni. Passed these out to most Samoan wards as a teaching tool for parents & youth.

9. Started a Tutoring service via the Westlake Family Center, where our Samoan or any Polynesian student can come for help with their school work. (Still running for 3 years now)

10. Set up an Education Fair – especially for high school seniors in preparation for college.

11. Started a scholarship award for high school seniors here in Utah. Our first recipient for this scholarship was an alumni’s daughter.

12. Started a scholarship program – CCWS Alumni Scholarship program for our church schools in Samoa; Pesega, Sauniatu, Vaiola, and Ah Mu Academy. In Nov. 2008 we gave out 31 scholarships to these schools. Last year we gave out 45 scholarships to mostly Pesega and Sauniatu schools, as they were the only ones who applied on time. Criteria for the scholarship is in place. Created a committee in Samoa to help with the screening process of our scholarship, delivery of the scholarships, and payment.

13. Sponsored a student from Samoa to attend BYU-Hawaii.

14. Kept a budget and recordings of all our financial dealings and paid taxes for the first time in the history of this organization.

15. Had peaceful general meetings for the first time in the last two years since we started! We had greatly discouraged contentions during our general meetings so we can discuss matters with open minds, good spirits, and use our time productively.

Dear fellow alumni,
As the going out president of our dear organization, I would like to thank all of you for your support as we marched down the road of progression with this organization. For the most part, it was a very productive, challenging, heart-wrenching, a lot of fun, time consuming, a lot of work, but a very worthwhile endeavor. I think we have come a long ways with this organization since it started, and we hope it will continue to progress in the right direction from here on out.

We thank all of our families; the Lealaitafeas, Taalas, and Hunts especially for the wonderful support they have been. Like our old Samoan saying, “ O uo i aso uma ae o uso i aso vale”. This has been very true. I think our greatest supporters were our own brothers and sisters of whom are all CCWS alumni themselves. We thank them for helping us in moving this organization forward to where it is now. They have sacrificed right along with us in trying to accomplish the many goals and plans we had.

We would especially want to thank Bro. and Sis. Sherwood for the great service they have offered in developing and manning our CCWS website. What a great blessing that has been in being able to connect with our alumni everywhere! They have done this without any pay and all for the love of our Samoan people and this wonderful school of which we have all benefited from – CCWS. We would also want to thank all the Board members; Bro. Jensen, Irwin Purcell, Ui Poloai, Joe Stehlin, Bro. Sherwood, and my right hand partner, Fred Taala, and my friend Selena Hunt for their faithful support during this adventure.

When I took this position, I was not thinking of how it would glorify me at all, I was actually very excited in thinking about all I could do to help move this organization forward. I was also thinking about how much I love this school growing up. I don’t know about most of you, but I was actually really born in Pesega and have lived there all my life before leaving for Hawaii. So, it is truly a very special place for me. This is where I grew up, this is where some of my fondest memories of Samoa were experienced, this is where I gained my testimony, and this is where I learned so many things that helped form who I am today. I had the best time in school here – my high school years at CCWS were my best years in school!

So, as we come to the end of our term as the CCWS presidency, we would like to wish the new presidency good luck and wish them well as they take over this special organization. Anything good takes work, anything worth pursuing takes effort, but it is what makes us all “changed” individuals – hopefully for the better. Stay focused on the purpose of this organization, keep our alumni united and strong, and keep everything balanced with the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ and I know everything will turn out successfully for your new venture

Respectfully,
Ruta Lealaitafea Westin.

It is time to sustain the new CCWS presidency and committee. Accordingly, we will be meeting for this on April 10th at the Taylorsville Library at 10:00a.m.

Please plan to show your support by attending.

Hello, Just letting you know we need to have a meeting on February 6th at 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 at the Taylorsville Library. This is an important meeting where we need to think about the changing of the guards for our CCWS Alumni Organization. Fati and Filo, you can pursuade your young alumni to come on over and take this organization in the direction you would like, or help decide a new leadership for our organization. Please don't look at just the here and now, look forward to all the possibilities. In small groups, this organization will certainly fail, but together, we can do amazing and productive things. Ole tele o lima e mama ai se avega.

We have accomplished quite a few things as a presidency, but there still is a great need to push this organization forward to where it needs to be. We can accomplish so much if we all pull together. So, please let all those Pesega alumni you know be aware of this meeting so we can have a good turnout for the voting of the new presidency.

At the bottom of this section, you will find the information regarding the scholarships awarded for the 2010 school year.

SUBJECT: CCWS Reunion – October 2011

Dear Alumnus:

It was such a delight and a blessing to meet many former pupils and a few former teachers at the CCWS fireside in SLC under the leadership of Ruta Lealaitafea Westin and her committee. The Samoan choir from St. George who provided the music for the fireside was a real treat. They were absolutely amazing. The choir included several CCWS alumni such as Tuifao and Fogaa Tufuga, Ko and Tiare Piula, Taei Aloi, Male and Meleni Siteine and many others who willingly accepted the invitation to be part of the fireside. They traveled many miles that evening because of their deep love for the school. It was a significant sacrifice on their part and we sincerely thank them for the spiritual experience they contributed to the fireside.

We also congratulate the class of ‘69 for an incredible reunion during the week of the General Conference under the direction of Hans Taala. We appreciate Hans and his classmates for extending an open invitation to all CCWS alumni to join them. Those who were able to participate had a fabulous time and were exceptionally grateful to be part of a week filled with fun. A few of us alumni who were invited to attend the ‘66 class activity on Saturday evening under the guidance of Vaituu Kaio and Simi Brown were quite humbled, touched and uplifted as several of them shared their personal account of health adversity, family success stories and of course the rekindling of the CCWS spirit with old acquaintances. Furthermore, we all participated in a moment-of-silence in honor of their classmates who had passed on to the other side of the veil. We were quite overcome with such a thoughtful gesture – was extremely befitting and emotional. Throughout those activities, many of them have expressed a pressing desire for the opportunity to hold a CCWS reunion in 2011.

In that spirit, we decided to write this humble supplication to you all:

  1. Could you please recommend names of individuals whom you know they will be willing to organize this school reunion? The more classes represented the better. It is our sincere hope that through these designated individuals we could form an effective steering committee with selected officers who are eager to serve the alumni by developing, organizing and implementing an enjoyable school reunion that all of us can enjoy.

  1. Could you also send us your input and/or ideas of what you would like to take place in this school reunion? Everyone’s voice is valuable if we want a successful outcome.

The plan is to hold this reunion in SLC during the week of the October General Conference in 2011. Once this committee is in position and your ideas and input are assembled and analyzed, we will then quickly disseminate the crucial information so you would have ample time to plan your work and family schedules accordingly.

We are certain that a school reunion will be a rewarding experience for all of us and particularly those who have not experienced the fun spirit of a class reunion that some of you have enjoyed. We also know there are many who did not graduate from CCWS but have attended for a semester, one year or more and still uncertain whether they are alumni or not. There are also supportive spouses of our alumni who may be in the same category of uncertainty. Let alone our teachers and administrators who have played a key role in our lives. We want you to know that all of you are genuine alumni of this great school and we invite you to be part of this exciting charge. We also understand that some alumni may not be able to attend for one reason or another but we are hopeful that many will come to represent their respective classes and become the catalyst in spreading the word for future events.

We recognize that several classes have implemented successful and memorable reunions. We applaud you for your efforts. It is our desire to capitalize on your expertise and experience in organizing this upcoming reunion. We have learned that Utah and perhaps New Zealand and Australia have already formed CCWS associations and we would like to channel the information via your group to get the ball rolling in your area.

Dear Fellow Alumni,

I just wanted to let all those who helped out during our Combined Reunion, know how much we appreciated their support and their involvement in making this past week such a success and a lot of fun. We especially thank those who traveled from long distances to be here with us. We thank Hans, Ramona, and Vernetta for all the planning of their Class of '69 activities and opening it to all of us, and also the CCWS Alumni committee and active members who donated a lot of their time in making the dance on Friday, Saturday activity, and the Sunday Fireside wonderful events. We also would like to thank all of you who came out to support us in these events. An extra thank you to the wonderful St. George Polynesian Choir for the fantastic music they presented on Sunday's Fireside!! That was a perfect ending to our Combined Reunion.

I feel this has been a good start of something great to come about in the near future. God bless you in whatever you are doing and where ever you are, and may you be a shinning example of this great school in whatever part of the world you reside in. We love you all and thank you so much for being a part of this memorable reunion.

Love,
Ruta Westin,
President of CCWS Alumni USA Organization

The Family Night at West Lake Junior High will be open, especially for Samoan families/parents, on the second Thursday of October. After that, the facility will be opened every Thursday for parents who are interested in learning how to access their children's grades, attendance, and missing assignments on the computer.
It will also be used to help tutor any student on assignments they need help with, or teach any parent who is interested in learning English, or learn to read in English.

We will have CCWS volunteers to assist every Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. In the Spring, we will utilize this facility to help fill out college applications, scholarship applications, FAFSA forms for college financial aide, and anything else you need help completing.

We are still looking for more volunteers to help man this undertaking.

  • We want to encourage Samoan families to come to the West Lake Family Night at 3500 S. 3450 W. to get support for themselves or their children in any area of education.  The hours are 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings

  • We have an urgent need to sell the remaining items listed on our "Store" pages. We are nearly ready to make online sales available through PayPal but until then, you can make purchases directly through Ruta Westin - 801-941-1854.
